THE NAMING OF TOBERMORY RIDGE

Hamlet Homes has a tradition of naming its communities after Scottish people and places. The town of Tobermory was established in 1788 and created by the British Fisheries Society on the western coast of Scotland on the Isle of Mull. Tobermory derives its name from the Gaelic ‘Tobar Mhoire’ meaning the well of Mary.

Mary’s Well and Mary’s Chapel dated back to the Medieval period, and the water from the well was said to possess medicinal properties. Both the well and chapel are gone but a monument was erected on the approximate site of the well in commemoration of Edward VII’s coronation. THE NAMING OF CARLISLE PLACE

Few areas in the United Kingdom have produced as many notable family names in world history as the border region of Carlisle. Carlisle Castle is the most-besieged place in the British Isles and in 1568 Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned there for six weeks while her cousin Queen Elizabeth I considered a course of action. The canal of Port Carlisle led to industry and shipbuilding, but was soon replaced by railway – a transportation system that secured the future of the city with no less than eight busy lines, six of them remaining in operation today.
